Restoring and Reroofing a National Treasure

The Murphy’s team was commissioned for careful restoration, reroofing and replacement of air-conditioning systems at the NSW Parliament House. Our scope of remedial building work extended to several of the parliament’s buildings, including Rum Hospital, Historic Lobby, the Legislative Council Chamber, the Presidents Wing, the Legislative Assembly Chamber and the Speakers Wing. Historical aspects of the building have been in use since 1856, and only a capable team could be trusted. Our heritage building restoration specialists were ideal for the job.

One of the challenges was ensuring safe, normal access to the building for parliamentary members. We achieved this with certified temporary access provisions, scaffolding and regular inspections. To retain the building's historic detailing in the most effective way and stay compliant, we consulted with reputable heritage architects, Stapleton & Partners.

Another challenge was that the mechanical air conditioning system had to be replaced while the parliament was not in session. With efficient communication and project management, we were able to install, test and integrate the new system so it would be fully operational when needed.

In conclusion, this was a comprehensive remedial building and heritage restoration project, involving demolition, hazardous lead dust and asbestos removal, painting, roof plumbing and more, which our team handled expertly. We were proud to contribute to such a significant part of Australian history.
